Weekly Wings: February 8, 2024 - Pigeon Feed Phase 1, Palomabot Growth, and Cosmos-SDK v0.50.0

Your new Paloma hatchlings this week?

Welcome to the weekly update on new software design from the Paloma community of developers.

REMINDER WARNING: The Hatchling Paloma Network of “Messenger” (v1.12.0) and the Pigeon relay module are on v1.10.2. Paloma is still young, and its Cosmwasm and EVM contracts are still unaudited and undergoing continuous upgrades on the protocol and its smart contracts. The GRAIN token is available on the Paloma mainnet but is not yet trading on exchanges. Although the flock is flying on the messenger mainnet, it is still subject to the continued development of Paloma’s cross-chain messaging system and the security guarantees offered by the GRAIN token. We expect “Messenger” to experience weekly chain halts and chain restarts. We also expect numerous undiscovered vulnerabilities. No one on this project controls or influences the price of GRAINs. The community will strive to preserve the mainnet state, which includes balances, but considers this mainnet high-risk. Proceed with caution.

1. Getting ready for Paloma v1.12.1 and Pigeon Feed Phase 1

Pigeons are at the heart of the Paloma value prop. They are responsible for relaying messages on time and thus power all Palomabots. The Volume team is currently working on improving Paloma’s Quality of Service (QoS) and dynamic routing feature, “Pigeon Feed”. With v1.12.0 deployed on Paloma testnet-15 on February 6, the first version of performance and reliability metrics was introduced. Testnet validators are now able to view their performance metrics using the palomad q metrix validator <address> command. More details on the metrics and the module can be found in the Paloma Forum and in the Paloma github readme.

This is an important step in advancing pigeon feed and establishing a competitive fee market for message relaying so that Pigeons who perform better will relay more messages. Mainnet is scheduled to upgrade next week, pending governance by the Paloma community, to Paloma v12.1 which concludes all the work-in-progress metrics as well.

The PIP to upgrade to Paloma v1.12.1 can be found here : https://forum.palomachain.com/t/pip-54-paloma-mainnet-upgrade-to-paloma-v1-12-1/569

2. Paloma Chain hits $24MM in Automated Bot Execution Volume

Paloma Chain hits $24MM in Volume on the continued growth of the cross-chain bots from the Palomabot project. The latest bot with the most volume was the Curve TWAP Bot. This bot breaks one larger swap into multiple swaps. Curve Leverage Bot continues to attract more users.

3. Vitwit Upgrades Pigeon Cosmos-SDK v0.50.0 with End-to-end Integration Tests

The Vitwit team upgraded Pigeon to be compatible with the new Cosmos-SDK v0.50.0 chain upgrade. The team is currently working through end-to-end testing with both the upgraded Paloma and Pigeon binaries and fixing the issues found along the way. As this is a big change, the Vitwit and Volume teams are careful to test and review all changes as they are being made.

Conclusions:

Paloma attestation upgrades continue the work of Pigeon Feed and released Pigeon performance metric tracking. We continue to partner with Vitwit for Paloma’s upgrade to Cosmos-SDK 0.50.0 with end-to-end testing. We continue to fly faster and faster with each week! COO! COO!
